Getting Started

What is raw denim?

Raw denim is denim that has not been washed, distressed, or artificially aged after the jeans are made. It starts stiff and deep indigo in colour, then gradually softens and develops unique character through everyday wear.

At Mith Denim, we use premium Japanese selvedge raw denim, woven on traditional shuttle looms and crafted to age beautifully over time.

What makes raw denim different from regular jeans?

Unlike pre-washed jeans, raw denim develops its own character over time. Every fade, crease, and mark reflects how you wear your jeans, making each pair completely unique.

No two pairs of raw denim jeans will ever look the same—because no two people live the same life.

Is raw denim uncomfortable?

It can feel stiff at first, but that's completely normal. With regular wear, the fabric gradually softens and moulds to your body.

Within a few weeks, you'll notice your jeans becoming more comfortable while retaining the structure that makes raw denim so distinctive.

Is raw denim worth it?

If you appreciate quality craftsmanship, durability, and products that improve with age, raw denim is well worth the investment.

Mith Denim jeans are cut and sewn in Nepal using carefully selected Japanese selvedge denim—built to be worn, repaired, and enjoyed for years, not replaced every season.

Fit & Sizing

Should I size up or buy my normal size?

Mith Denim jeans are sanforized, meaning they have been mechanically pre-shrunk during manufacturing.

You can choose your usual size with confidence. Expect minimal shrinkage—typically around 3–5% (approximately 1 inch or less) after the first wash or soak.

Always refer to our Size Guide for your specific pair.

Does raw denim stretch?

Yes. The waistband and areas under regular tension—such as the thighs, seat, and knees—will stretch slightly with wear, while the length changes very little.

Most stretching occurs during the first few weeks of wear before the fabric settles into its natural shape.

Does raw denim shrink?

Yes, but only slightly. Because Mith Denim jeans are sanforized, you can expect approximately 3–5% shrinkage after the first wash or soak.

Washing in cold water and always air drying will help minimise shrinkage.

What's the difference between sanforized and unsanforized denim?

Sanforized denim (like Mith Denim) has been mechanically pre-shrunk, resulting in minimal shrinkage after washing.

Unsanforized denim has not been pre-shrunk and typically requires sizing up, a first soak, and more careful sizing.

Both offer the same authentic raw denim experience—the main difference is how much the fabric shrinks after washing.

Washing & Care

How often should I wash raw denim?

Wash your jeans when they genuinely need it—not according to a fixed schedule.

How often depends on how frequently you wear them and your lifestyle. Many raw denim enthusiasts go several months between washes to encourage natural fade development while keeping their jeans in good condition.

Can I machine wash raw denim?

Yes. While we recommend hand washing or soaking whenever possible, machine washing on a cold, gentle cycle is perfectly acceptable when needed.

Always turn your jeans inside out and use a mild detergent free from bleach or optical brighteners.

Should I tumble dry my jeans?

No. Always allow your jeans to air dry naturally.

High heat can increase shrinkage, stress the cotton fibres, and reduce the lifespan of your denim. Hang or lay your jeans flat to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

Should I use fabric softener?

No. Fabric softeners coat the cotton fibres and may interfere with the way raw denim develops character over time.

Stick to a mild detergent designed for dark colours or delicate fabrics.

Indigo Transfer

Why is blue dye coming off my jeans?

This is called indigo transfer, and it's a completely normal characteristic of authentic raw denim.

Because raw denim hasn't been washed after production, some surface indigo naturally transfers onto lighter-coloured materials during the early stages of wear. It's a sign your denim is the real thing.

Do raw denim jeans bleed?

Yes. Some indigo dye naturally rubs off during the first few months of wear and the first few washes. This gradually decreases over time as excess surface indigo wears away.

Will indigo transfer stop?

Yes. As the denim breaks in, indigo transfer becomes much less noticeable. Regular wear and occasional washing gradually reduce excess surface dye while preserving the rich character of the fabric.

Can indigo stain shoes or furniture?

Yes. Light-coloured shoes, bags, furniture, and car seats are more likely to show temporary indigo transfer during the early months of wear. Being mindful during this period helps avoid unwanted staining.

Fades

How long do fades take?

Most people begin noticing early fades after a few months of regular wear. High-contrast fades—the kind that make a pair truly special—often take a year or longer to develop.

Patience is part of the raw denim experience.

How do I get better fades?

Wear your jeans regularly. Allow natural creases to develop. Wash only when needed. Always air dry. Avoid artificial distressing or trying to force fade lines.

The best fades are earned naturally through everyday life—not manufactured.

Will my jeans still fade if I wash them?

Yes. Washing doesn't stop your jeans from fading. Regular wear remains the biggest factor in fade development. Washing simply removes dirt, oils, and excess surface indigo, helping keep your jeans clean and prolong their lifespan.

Do heavier jeans fade better?

Not necessarily. Heavier denim often develops sharper crease lines because the fabric is stiffer, but beautiful fades come from consistent wear—not fabric weight alone.

Whether you choose 13 oz, 16 oz, or 23 oz Japanese selvedge denim, every weight develops its own unique character over time.

Everyday Wear

Can I wear raw denim every day?

Absolutely. Regular wear is the best way to break in your jeans and develop natural fade patterns. The more you wear them, the more they become uniquely yours.

Can I wear raw denim in summer?

Yes. Our 13 oz denim is ideal for warmer weather and everyday comfort, while 16 oz and 23 oz options provide a more substantial feel that's especially appreciated in cooler conditions.

Can I wear raw denim in the rain?

Yes. Occasional rain won't damage your jeans. If they become soaked, allow them to air dry naturally away from direct heat. Avoid tumble drying.

Can I cuff my jeans?

Absolutely. Cuffing is a popular way to adjust the length of your jeans while showcasing the distinctive selvedge edge—a hallmark of premium Japanese shuttle-loom denim.

Do raw denim jeans wrinkle?

Yes. Natural creases are part of the raw denim experience. Over time, many of these creases become the honeycombs, whiskers, and other fade patterns that make every pair unique.

Longevity

How long should raw denim last?

With proper care, a quality pair of raw denim jeans can last for many years. Many enthusiasts continue wearing and repairing their favourite pairs rather than replacing them, allowing the fades and repairs to become part of the jeans' story.

Should I repair my jeans?

Yes. Small repairs made early—whether through darning, patching, or sashiko stitching—can significantly extend the life of your jeans while preserving the fades you've earned.

Many denim enthusiasts believe thoughtful repairs add even more character to a well-loved pair.
